Chlorophytum (lat. Chlorophytum) is a genus of herbaceous plants. Previously, Chlorophytum belonged to the Liliaceae family; Among modern studies, there is no consensus on the place of this genus: according to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, the genus belongs to the Asparagus family, according to the GRIN website – to the Agave family.

A grassy plant with drooping stems. Its long linear leaves are collected in basal bundles.

Chlorophytum flowers are small, gathered in a loose panicle.

Stalks of an arc-shaped form after flowering at their ends form bunches of leaves with aerial roots. Strong specimens have numerous drooping stems with leaf rosettes.

Chlorophytum borovilianum or Safed muesli (lat. Chlorophytum borivilianum) is a herbaceous plant whose tuberous roots are called “white gold” in India. They are used to maintain health, improve overall well-being and as an aphrodisiac for men. In addition, it is believed that they help women recover faster after childbirth and are often used to increase lactation in nursing mothers.

Chemical composition

The root contains carbohydrates (42%), proteins (5-10%), fiber (3-4%) and saponins (17-20%). Steroid saponins, polysaccharides, fatty acids (omega-3α: linolenic acid, omega-6: eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA, docosahexaenoic acid or DHA, gamma-linolenic acid or GLA, dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid or DGLA, arachidonic acid or AA) , stigmasterols, as well as carbohydrates (35-45%), fiber (25-35%), alkaloids (15-25%) and proteins (5-10%), minerals – potassium, calcium, magnesium; resins, sucrose, glucose, fructose, galactose, mannose and xylose.
